CHURCHES
St. Joseph Catholic Church, the Arma United Methodist Church and the
First
Southern Baptist Church are the three churches in Arma. All are
very
active and much of the town's social life is centered around church
activities.

Arma church observes 90th anniversary
ARMA -- The Arma United Methodist Church will celebrate 90 years of
ministry in Arma during worship services at 11 a.m. Sunday.
The service will include the singing of favorite gospel hymns and
remembrances of the congregation. Three former pastors, Oliver Rosas,
Robert Plank and Chris Conklin, plan to be present. A carry-in dinner
will be held following the service.
In 1912 a Methodist minister named J. Kansas Morgan held meetings in
the coal mining communities of Crawford County. One of those
communities was Arma, and before long it was decided that a church
needed to be started there. Land for the new church was purchased from
William Armacost for the price of $1.
Also in 1912, a small group of people signed an affidavit forming the
Methodist Episcopal Church of Arma.
In 1914 a church building was erected on the land purchased from
Armacost. The current Arma United Methodist Church is located on this
same plot of land.
The church has been served by many different pastors over the years.
One of them, Fred E. Sutton, served the church for 18 years, starting
in 1925. The current pastor, Steve Cole, has been with the church since
1995.
The celebration of ministry will be open to the public. Anyone wishing
additional information may contact the church at 620-347-8336 or
620-347-8540.
