What is a tornado watch?
A tornado watch means conditions are conducive for the development of tornadoes in and close to our area.

What is a tornado warning?
A tornado has been sighted by spotters or is indicated on radar in our area.

When are the tornado sirens for Arma turned on?
The tornado sirens are turned on when the City has been notified by authorities that a tornado is in Crawford County and the City appears to be in imminent danger.  When you hear the sirens, you should take cover and have a battery powered radio with you.  By listening to the radio, you will know where the tornado is tracking.  The sirens will sound for three minutes and then stop.  After a short time, the sirens will again sound for three minutes and then stop.  This cycle will continue until the tornado warning has been lifted for our area.

Who has authority to turn on the tornado sirens?
The tornado sirens may be turned on by the Chief of Police, the Fire Chief, or any Police Officer on duty.

How do the people of Arma know the tornado warning has been lifted for our area?
People will know the tornado warning has been lifted when the sirens are no longer sounding.  People should listen to their radio for an announcement.  The Police will drive around town and use the loud speaker to give an “All Clear” statement.  Using the loud speaker is something new we are going to try.

When are the tornado sirens tested?
The tornado sirens are tested the first and third Friday of each month from March through October, and the third Friday of each month from November through February.  The sirens will sound at 12:00 noon weather permitting.  This is a new policy.

Are there Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) approved tornado shelters in Arma?
Yes, there are FEMA approved tornado shelters in Arma.  They are located at Northeast High School .  The four locker rooms in the north gymnasium are approved shelters.  An Arma Police Officer will open the north doors to Northeast High School whenever there is a tornado warning for our area.

Do emergency personnel know where people are located in the event of an emergency?
Yes, the Arma Police Department has a list of people who have basements and storm shelters with the number of people in those locations.  The list is three years old.  If you are uncertain if you are on that list you can contact Arma City Hall at 347-4125 or the Arma Police Department at 347-4500.  This list will be used by emergency personnel to locate people in the aftermath of a tornado.
